Indications

Systop Ointment is indicated for the treatment of:

• Impetigo (a contagious skin infection)
• Infected cuts, wounds, and abrasions
• Minor burns with secondary bacterial infection
• Folliculitis (infection of hair follicles)
• Furuncles (boils)
• Secondary skin infections caused by bacteria

Mechanism of Action

Mupirocin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It specifically binds to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme necessary for protein production. This action prevents bacteria from growing and multiplying, ultimately leading to their elimination.

Because of its unique mechanism, Mupirocin shows minimal cross-resistance with other antibiotics, making it particularly useful in resistant infections, including certain strains of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

Dosage and Administration
