Tranexamic Acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine. It exerts its effect by reversibly blocking lysine-binding sites on plasminogen molecules. This action prevents the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, the enzyme responsible for breaking down fibrin clots. As a result, fibrin clots are stabilized, and excessive bleeding is reduced.
Tranexamic Acid does not initiate clot formation but helps preserve existing clots at sites of vascular injury. This targeted mechanism makes it effective in controlling bleeding without significantly increasing the risk of unwanted thrombosis when used appropriately.
