Valovir 500 mg is a potent antiviral medication used for the treatment and suppression of herpes virus infections, including herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes, and cold sores (Herpes labialis). It contains the active ingredient Valacyclovir Hydrochloride, a prodrug of acyclovir, which converts into acyclovir in the body to inhibit viral replication.
Valovir 500 mg works by slowing the growth and spread of the herpes virus, allowing the immune system to combat the infection more effectively. It reduces symptoms, shortens the duration of illness, and helps prevent recurrent episodes of herpes infections. The drug is suitable for both acute treatment and long-term suppressive therapy in immunocompetent and HIV-infected individuals.

Herpes Simplex & Varicella-Zoster Virus Infections
Valovir 500 mg is indicated for:
Herpes Zoster (Shingles): Treatment of shingles to reduce pain and viral spread.
Genital Herpes:
Initial episodes in immunocompetent adults
Recurrent episodes
Suppressive therapy for patients with frequent recurrences
Suppression of recurrent genital herpes in HIV-infected patients
Reduction of transmission to uninfected partners
Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis): Short-term treatment to speed healing and relieve symptoms.
Pediatric Use (specific age groups):
Cold sores in children >12 years
Chickenpox (Varicella) in children 2 to <18 years
Valovir 500 mg is the L-valyl ester prodrug of acyclovir, which has high oral bioavailability. Once absorbed, it is rapidly converted to acyclovir, which inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing viral replication.
Mechanism of Action: Slows viral replication, reduces viral load, and allows the immune system to control infection.
Effect: Decreases severity, duration, and frequency of herpes virus outbreaks.
Adults:
Cold Sores: 2 g every 12 hours for 1 day
Genital Herpes:
Initial episode: 1 g twice daily for 10 days
Recurrent episodes: 500 mg twice daily for 3 days
Suppressive therapy:
Immunocompetent: 1 g once daily (alternate 500 mg if <9 recurrences/year)
HIV-infected: 500 mg twice daily
Transmission reduction: 500 mg once daily
Herpes Zoster: 1 g three times daily for 7 days
Pediatric Patients:
Cold sores (>12 years): 2 g every 12 hours for 1 day
Chickenpox (2 to <18 years): 20 mg/kg three times daily for 5 days (max 1 g per dose)
Administration Notes:
Oral use only
Take with or without food
Ensure adequate hydration during therapy
Hypersensitivity to Valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any excipient
Severe renal impairment without dose adjustment
Common adverse reactions include:
Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
Neurological: Headache, dizziness
Most side effects are mild and transient. Rarely, severe renal or CNS effects may occur in high-risk patients.
Dose adjustment required in renal impairment
Caution in elderly patients, low body weight, or those receiving nephrotoxic drugs
Immunocompromised patients should be monitored carefully
Maintain adequate hydration to reduce the risk of renal complications
Pregnancy Category B: Animal studies show no teratogenicity at high doses; human studies are limited.
Breastfeeding: Excreted minimally; use only if clearly needed and with caution.
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light
Keep out of reach of children
Valovir 500 mg is converted to acyclovir, which inhibits viral DNA polymerase, halting viral replication. It effectively reduces viral load, severity, and recurrence of herpes infections, while allowing the immune system to control the infection.
