Combination antibacterial (Sulfonamide + Folate synthesis inhibitor)
Megatrim DS Tablet works by inhibiting two sequential steps in the bacterial folic acid synthesis pathway. Sulphamethoxazole interferes with the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid, while Trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, preventing the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid. This synergistic mechanism produces a potent bactericidal effect, reducing the risk of bacterial resistance and ensuring effective eradication of susceptible organisms.
Megatrim DS Tablet is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria, including:
Urinary tract infections
Respiratory tract infections such as acute bronchitis and pneumonia
Gastrointestinal infections including traveler’s diarrhea
Skin and soft tissue infections
Ear infections such as otitis media
Certain sexually transmitted infections as advised by a physician

The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of infection, as well as the patient’s age, body weight, and renal function. Megatrim DS Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Tablets are usually taken with water and may be taken with food to minimize gastric irritation. Patients are advised to complete the full course of therapy even if symptoms improve earlier.
